Mallam Yankee Marks 30 Years in Nigerian Entertainment, Now Manages 2Baba

In Abuja, the city’s music scene veteran Kehinde Adegbite—known onstage as Mallam Yankee—took to the stage to celebrate a full three decades of shaping Nigerian pop culture. The ceremony, held in the capital’s most prominent event space, spotlighted his deep‑rooted ties to the industry’s formative years and his newly announced role as the official manager of the legendary singer Innocent Idibia, better known as 2Baba.

Mallam Yankee’s journey began in the early 2000s, a period often hailed as the golden era of the Nigerian group Plantashun Boiz. He told reporters that his friendship with 2Baba dates back to that time. "I can confirm that I am now the official manager of 2Face Idibia," he said. "But our story did not begin today. It began in the golden era of Plantashun Boiz. I have walked this journey for as long as that legendary group has been part of Nigeria’s music history. We grew in the same era, watched the industry evolve together, and that bond has endured the test of time."

Over the years, Mallam Yankee has been a behind‑the‑scenes catalyst for a host of talents who later became household names. He recalled that many of Nigeria’s biggest stars crossed his path long before the spotlight found them. "Many of Nigeria’s biggest stars crossed my path long before the spotlight found them. Some I managed, others I supported, and for many, I simply created the platform they needed to be seen," he said, citing Kizz Daniel, MI, D’banj, Tekno, Wande Coal, Portable and several comedians.

His influence extends beyond music. Mallam Yankee took over the management of Opa Williams’ comedy show, Nite of a Thousand Laughs, turning the program into a launchpad for emerging comedians. He also helped transform Abuja’s nightlife. "When we arrived in the year 2000, Abuja slept early. There was hardly a nightlife to speak of. We dared to dream differently and helped build a vibrant entertainment culture," he reflected. As chairman and co‑founder of The Bank nightclub, he turned the venue into a hub for major events in the city.

The promoter highlighted the Abuja International Carnival, a project that the federal government recently embraced. The carnival was rebranded in 2024 in partnership with the Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy. "Seeing that vision come to life is both gratifying and inspiring," he said.

Beyond Abuja, Mallam Yankee has established entertainment hubs in Owerri, Port Harcourt and other Nigerian cities, contributing to the country’s reputation as a destination for live entertainment.

Looking ahead, the promoter said his immediate focus is on managing 2Baba’s career. "2Baba is more than a music legend; he is the greatest musical icon to have come out of Africa. He is a timeless institution. What has kept us together is not just business but mutual respect, loyalty and genuine friendship. Since the days of Plantashun Boiz, he has never forgotten me or looked away. That is the mark of true greatness," he added.

Mallam Yankee indicated that the remainder of the year will feature a series of events and activities, urging entertainment enthusiasts to stay tuned for an eventful season.
