Toy Story 5 Premieres, Blending Classic Toy Adventure With Modern Tablet Technology

Disney and Pixar released Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026, after a world premiere in Los Angeles on June 9. The film is the fifth installment in the franchise that began with the 1995 computer‑animated feature that introduced the world to Woody, Buzz Lightyear and a cast of toys that live when humans are not around.

Toy Story 5 follows the toys two years after the events of Toy Story 4. Jessie, Woody and Buzz must deal with a new device that has become Bonnie’s favorite plaything. The tablet, named Lilypad and voiced by Greta Lee, is portrayed as a sentient toy that competes for the children’s attention. The story explores how the presence of a screen‑based playmate affects the relationships between the toys and the child.

The film was directed by Andrew Stanton, who conceived the story and co‑wrote the screenplay with Kenna Harris. Stanton has written and directed the first four Toy Story films and returned to the franchise after a brief hiatus. Production on the fifth film was confirmed in February 2023, with Stanton announced as director in June 2024. The voice cast includes Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), Joan Cusack (Jessie), Conan O’Brien, Scarlett Spears (Bonnie), Greta Lee (Lilypad), Shelby Rabara, Mykal‑Michelle Harris and Craig Robinson.

Randy Newman returned to score the film, marking his tenth collaboration with Pixar. The soundtrack also features a single by Taylor Swift, “I Knew It, I Knew You.” The production budget was reported at $250 million, making it one of the most expensive animated films ever produced.

Toy Story 5 was released in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film opened to positive reviews from critics. Reviewers praised the animation quality, the performances of the returning voice actors, the humor, and the themes that address modern childhood experiences. Box‑office data shows that the film has grossed $129.3 million worldwide.

The Toy Story franchise has a long history of commercial success. The series has earned more than $3.3 billion at the global box office and is the third highest‑grossing animated franchise worldwide. Each of the first four films set box‑office records, with Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 ranking among the top 50 all‑time worldwide films.

Disney’s acquisition of Pixar in 2006 brought the Toy Story franchise under the Disney umbrella. Since then, Disney has expanded its portfolio to include Marvel, Lucasfilm, 21st Century Fox and other major entertainment properties. The company’s direct‑to‑consumer streaming service, Disney+, hosts a large library of Pixar titles.

In addition to the film’s entertainment value, Toy Story 5 touches on contemporary concerns about screen time. Studies published in 2024 and 2025 have linked high daily screen use in children under ten to irritability, reduced executive function, poor sleep and challenges in social and emotional development. The film’s narrative introduces a tablet character that reflects the growing role of digital devices in children’s play.

While the film does not present a definitive stance on screen use, it incorporates the device as a central element of the plot, allowing audiences to see how the toys react to the presence of a digital playmate. The storyline also highlights the importance of unstructured play and imaginative interaction.

Toy Story 5’s release comes at a time when Disney continues to invest in family‑friendly content across multiple platforms. The film’s performance will be monitored as part of Disney’s broader strategy to balance traditional animation with digital media offerings.

The current status is that Toy Story 5 has completed its theatrical run and is available on Disney+ for streaming. No further sequels have been announced, and the franchise remains open for future projects.
