Sonic Team Head Takashi Iizuka Discusses 35th Anniversary, New Games, and Future Plans at Summer Game Fest 2026
At Summer Game Fest 2026, Sonic Team chief Takashi Iizuka stood on the main stage to celebrate the franchise’s 35th birthday and preview a fresh lineup that could redefine the series.
The interview followed the announcement of a new title, Sonic Pico Park, and came after the release of two well‑received Sonic games: the racing spin‑off Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and the remake of Sonic X Shadow Generations. Iizuka said the series is in a strong position, with a broad fan base that includes both adults and children.
Iizuka, who has been producing Sonic games for more than three decades, reflected on his early days. "When I started making Sonic games over 30‑plus years ago, I didn’t really think about the community," he said. "We were just making games, but the longer I was working on Sonic, and the more games we made, the more we heard from fans who really appreciated the content, who really wanted to know what’s coming next." He added that titles such as Sonic Generations were designed to appeal to both the original generation of fans and their children.
The 35th anniversary began in January 2026. Iizuka noted that the fan base has grown to include a wide range of ages. "Even now we have a wide range of not only adults playing Sonic games, but we also have children playing Sonic games," he said. "We have a huge audience of people who are enjoying the content, which I really appreciate, but it’s also a lot of pressure because I don’t want to betray them. I don’t want to make something that people are not going to feel is true to Sonic."
When asked whether he plans to move on from the series, Iizuka said he sees Sonic as a long‑term creative partner. "It’s strange when you say things like that, because when you think about it, I’ve been making Sonic games and been with Sonic longer than I’ve been with my own children," he replied. "I really enjoy getting to be creative for such a great character, and bringing this content to so many great people. And moving forward, I’m going to continue to enjoy making Sonic games." He added that he views the franchise as almost a child of his own.
The new Sonic Pico Park, revealed during the festival’s showcase, is expected to expand the Sonic universe beyond traditional platforming and racing. While details remain limited, the title promises fresh gameplay experiences.
Sega has been promoting the anniversary through a series of events. A special birthday livestream is scheduled for June 23, 2026, at 9:30 AM PT on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel. The livestream will feature additional content and fan interaction.
Industry observers note that the recent releases have performed well critically and commercially. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has been praised for its cross‑world racing mechanics, and the Sonic X Shadow Generations remake has been highlighted for its updated graphics and faithful recreation of the original. These successes reinforce the franchise’s position as a key property for Sega.
Iizuka’s comments underscore the balance between maintaining legacy and innovating for new audiences. He acknowledges the pressure that comes with a dedicated fan base while expressing confidence in his ability to continue delivering quality Sonic experiences.
The 35th‑anniversary celebrations will continue through the rest of 2026, with additional events and releases expected. Fans can follow updates on the official Sonic channels and the upcoming livestream on June 23.
For now, the Sonic Team remains focused on delivering new content while honoring the franchise’s history, with Takashi Iizuka at the helm leading the creative direction.
