Whit Conways Rapid-Edit Process Drives Never Change! to Tribeca Premiere
Whit Conway, the editor who has worked on Adult Swim’s Joe Pera Talks With You and Saturday Night Live, completed the first assembly of the comedy Never Change! in just one week after production wrapped. The film, directed by Marty Schousboe and written by John Reynolds, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 9, 2026, and was released on Hulu on June 17.
Never Change! follows a group of former high‑school seniors who return to North Meadows High in their thirties to finish their education after a tornado abruptly ended their senior year in 2005. The story blends humor with a nostalgic look at homecoming, featuring a cast that includes Reynolds, Sofia Black‑D'Elia, Carmen Christopher, Jo Firestone, Rudy Pankow, Topher Grace, Jackie Cruz, Ana Gasteyer, Patti Harrison, and Zach Cherry.
Conway explained that his collaboration with Schousboe began when the director‑editor pair worked together on three seasons of Joe Pera Talks With You. "I wanted to work on this because I love collaborating with good friends," Conway said. He added that the film’s comedic style—"a lot of silliness, a sprinkle of stupidity, and a solid heart"—was a key reason for his involvement.
The editing workflow relied heavily on Adobe Premiere to keep hundreds of sequences organized. Conway’s assistant editor, Kristie Ferriso, who previously worked on SNL, sorted daily footage and maintained a system that allowed the team to locate takes quickly. Speech‑to‑Text was run on all takes, enabling editors to search for specific performances and identify the funniest moments.
Conway also used After Effects for visual‑effects work. He described the use of Roto Brush as a major advantage: "It made it possible to create very quick and dirty VFX comps for us to prove if a concept is working, and allow us to revise and refine much more quickly." The first assembly included early VFX passes, a process that would not have been possible without the current capabilities of After Effects.
Throughout production, Conway and Schousboe maintained constant communication. "We decided that our goal right from the jump was to allow Marty and John Reynolds the opportunity to see everything on its feet as soon as possible," Conway said. The team produced a rough cut a week after wrap, which helped identify scenes that required more attention and set priorities for subsequent edits.
Conway highlighted the importance of rapid iteration in comedy. "The main cast held the emotional heart of the movie while delivering comedic performances, leaving room for the supporting characters to come in and be hilarious as well," he noted. He stressed that the editing process was designed to keep the film’s humor sharp and responsive to the director’s vision.
The film’s release strategy reflects Hulu’s broader push into original comedy. According to a May 15, 2026 announcement, Hulu and Disney+ will stream Never Change! in the United States, with the film available on Hulu’s platform from June 17. The project’s premiere at Tribeca and subsequent streaming release position it as a notable entry in the 2026 comedy lineup.
In summary, Whit Conway’s disciplined use of Adobe tools, a well‑structured workflow, and close collaboration with director Marty Schousboe enabled the rapid assembly of Never Change!. The film’s premiere at Tribeca and release on Hulu underscore the continued relevance of high‑quality, fast‑paced comedy in the streaming era.
