Collin Gosselin to Release Memoir Exposing Alleged Abuse in Reality-TV Family

Collin Gosselin, the 22‑year‑old son of former reality‑TV stars Jon and Kate Gosselin, announced that he will publish a memoir this fall. Titled In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, the book is scheduled for release on October 13 by Grand Central Publishing. In the publisher’s description, Gosselin says the book will reveal the “never‑before‑told story of how he escaped and found his way back from the dark.” The memoir is expected to detail experiences that were hidden from the public eye during the family’s decade‑long run on the show Jon & Kate Plus 8 and its successor Kate Plus 8.

Collin Gosselin was born in 2004 and grew up in a family that became a national reality‑TV fixture when his parents, Jon and Kate, filmed their home life from 2007 to 2017. The series, which later dropped the “Jon” name after the couple’s 2009 divorce, followed the Gosselin children as they navigated life as sextuplets and twins. In 2018, Jon was granted sole custody of Collin and sister Hannah, while the other siblings remained with their mother. Since then, Collin has repeatedly publicized allegations that his mother abused and exploited him, claims that Kate has denied.

According to the book’s synopsis, Gosselin will describe being held down, a basement cell where he was hidden for years, and a “cocktail of powerful antipsychotics” administered to an eleven‑year‑old boy. He also says the memoir will recount a Christmas morning in which gifts were reclaimed as soon as cameras went off. In an interview with Us Weekly, Gosselin said he had kept these experiences private because he feared disbelief and was not ready to speak. He added that writing the book forced him to revisit painful moments but also gave him a voice.

Grand Central Publishing announced the memoir’s release date and format on its website, noting that the book will be available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions. The publisher described the work as a “personal account that challenges the glossy image of the Gosselin family.” The Gosselin family first entered the public eye when their parents and eight children were featured on the reality‑TV series Jon & Kate Plus 8, which aired from 2007 to 2017. The show documented the family’s daily life and was later rebranded as Kate Plus 8 after the parents’ divorce. The series has been cited in media reports as an example of the pressures faced by child participants in reality programming.

Jon Gosselin has promoted the upcoming release by posting pre‑order links on his Instagram Stories, while Kate has not yet posted about the book. Representatives for the former couple did not respond to requests for comment. The memoir follows a series of media reports that have highlighted Collin’s accusations of abuse, including claims that he was zip‑tied and locked in a basement and that he was institutionalized. Kate’s lawyer has publicly denied the allegations. The book’s release comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of the Gosselin family’s past.

Grand Central Publishing will make In the Shadow of Eight available in print and digital formats on October 13. No further statements have been issued by Collin, Jon, or Kate regarding the book’s content or the family’s future. The memoir’s publication marks the first time Collin’s account of his childhood has been made available to the public, and it will likely prompt renewed discussion of the impact of reality‑TV on child participants.
