NBCs Today Show Faces Security Breach After Intruder Confronts Host Craig Melvin
On Thursday, July 16, 2026, an unauthorized individual breached the perimeter of NBC’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York City.
The intruder, 41‑year‑old Andrew Truelove, approached co‑host Craig Melvin during the third hour of Today, shouting racial slurs before security detained him and the New York Police Department took him into custody.
The incident was reported to the NYPD at 9:19 a.m. Eastern Time, according to a department spokesperson who spoke to Entertainment Weekly. Truelove was later charged with burglary, menacing, criminal trespass and harassment, all hate‑crime offenses. NBC confirmed that the individual was arrested without further incident and that no one was injured.
NBC said it was reviewing the event and its security protocols. The network also announced that a security guard was fired following the breach. In a separate statement, NBC emphasized its commitment to the safety of employees, talent and guests and its cooperation with law enforcement.
Melvin returned to the air on Friday, July 17, as promised. During the broadcast he addressed the incident, saying he was “safe and sound” and that he was looking forward to the next day’s show. The co‑host’s Instagram post the evening before the incident also noted that he was doing fine and thanked viewers for their messages.
Craig Melvin has been a fixture on Today since 2018, when he became a co‑host of the third hour, and was promoted to permanent host in 2019. In January 2025 he was named co‑anchor of the first and second hours of the program. Prior to joining NBC, Melvin worked for WIS‑TV in Columbia, South Carolina, WRC‑TV in Washington, D.C., and MSNBC.
Today, which has aired since 1952, is broadcast from Studio 1A in the NBC building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The incident has prompted NBC to examine its security measures at the studio and to confirm that no other breaches occurred.
At present, the suspect remains in custody and the NYPD is continuing its investigation. NBC has not released additional details about the security review or the outcome of the charges.
The incident underscores the importance of robust security protocols for high‑profile broadcast studios and highlights the need for ongoing vigilance in protecting on‑air talent and staff.
