Michael J. Fox Promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada Amid 61 New Appointments

On June 26 2026, Ottawa’s Governor‑General’s office announced a landmark elevation: actor and Parkinson’s advocate Michael J. Fox was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest honour. The promotion joins 61 other new appointees, including soccer legend Christine Sinclair, former NHL star Yvan Cournoyer, film producer Niv Fichman, and Nickelodeon pioneer Roger Damon Price.

Fox, now 65, has carried the Order’s white insignia for 16 years, having been appointed an Officer in 2010. The new Companion rank allows him to wear the red, snowflake‑shaped badge that signifies the highest tier. Rideau Hall cited his “powerful global advocacy and unflinching honesty about Parkinson’s” as the key reason for the promotion. Diagnosed in 1991, Fox founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, raising more than $2.5 billion for research and integrating his condition into his acting work. His recent appearances include the 2023 documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and a 2024 episode of Apple TV+’s Shrinking.

The Order of Canada has three levels—Member, Officer and Companion— and limits living Companions to 180. The promotion follows the final tranche of appointments selected by former Governor‑General Mary Simon, who was succeeded by Louise Arbour earlier this month. The new cohort spans public servants, Indigenous leaders, athletes and entertainment figures. Diplomat Colin Robertson, host of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute podcast, noted that the honour recognises the “depth of knowledge” diplomats bring to Canada’s foreign policy.

In sports, Christine Sinclair received Companion status for her record as Canada’s most‑capped soccer player and world‑record goal scorer. Rideau Hall described her as “one of the most influential athletes in Canadian history” and highlighted her advocacy for women’s sport. Former Montreal Canadiens winger Yvan Cournoyer, who won ten Stanley Cups in a 16‑season NHL career, also earned the rank. Film producer Niv Fichman, known for The Red Violin and BlackBerry, and Nickelodeon’s Roger Damon Price, who introduced the neon‑green slime that became a cultural icon, were added to the Order.

Indigenous leader Charlie Watt, a former senator and Inuk advocate, was honoured for his role in negotiating the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, the first modern land‑claim settlement in Canada. He remarked that the award’s presentation by Simon, a Nunavik native, added personal significance.

The Order of Canada recognises Canadians who have made “extraordinary contributions to the nation.” The Governor‑General’s office released the appointments on the same day the Canadian Gazette published the official list. The 61 new members reflect a broad spectrum of Canadian society, from entertainment and sports to public service and Indigenous advocacy.

Fox said the honour represents “being an ambassador or a representative of Canada” and that the country’s sense of community is central to his identity. The full list of new Companions, Officers and Members will be formally inducted at a ceremony scheduled for later in 2026. Until then, recipients will wear their insignia in accordance with the Order’s protocols.
