Maddie Wiener Debuts at Rumors Comedy Club, Blending Dark Insight with Everyday Humor

Maddie Wiener, a rising stand‑up comedian and Saturday Night Live writer, is debuting at Rumor’s Comedy Club from today through Saturday, bringing her sharp, self‑examining humor to a New York audience. The North Carolina‑born comic, who has opened for Dave Attell and Anthony Jeselnik and co‑hosts the podcast “We’re Having Gay Sex,” will use the venue to explore topics ranging from her father’s Alzheimer’s to pet rabbits, illustrating why her work is resonating across the comedy circuit.

Wiener grew up in North Carolina as a straight‑A student and teacher’s pet. She says her father encouraged her to question authority rather than simply accept it, a lesson that has shaped her adult worldview. At 16 she discovered stand‑up comedy, attracted by the freedom to talk too much and to turn uncomfortable truths into jokes.

Her career has expanded from the local club scene to national stages. In 2021 she was named a “New Face” at the Just for Laughs Festival, and she has taped a stand‑up set for Comedy Central. She has appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and has opened for comedians such as Dave Attell, Anthony Jeselnik, Nikki Glaser, Joe List, and Matteo Lane. In addition to performing, Wiener writes for the writers’ room at Saturday Night Live and co‑hosts the podcast “We’re Having Gay Sex” with Ashley Gavin.

Wiener’s comedic voice is described as irreverent and brazenness‑laden, yet abrasive and likable. She avoids long personal stories, preferring to probe ideas and observations that arise from awkward truths. “I do love a laugh that’s also a groan,” she says, “Like, ‘Oh, I didn’t want to laugh at that, but that got me.’ That’s kind of my favourite button to push.” Her material often starts with questions she asks herself, and she finds humor in topics that most people would rather leave unsaid.

The set at Rumor’s reflects this approach. Wiener will touch on her father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis—an experience she says has been hard but “we’ve been laughing a lot about it.” She also plans to discuss pet rabbits, depression, suicide, and other subjects that might seem jarring together. “You can expect dark, you can expect weird,” she says, “But hopefully in a way that brings everyone on board.” Her style has earned her praise from audiences who sometimes expect less from a woman in stand‑up. “You were actually really funny,” she recalls, noting that the remark was more a surprise than a compliment.

The debut is significant for several reasons. It marks Wiener’s first performance at a New York club after her recent work on national television and in the SNL writers’ room. It also showcases her ability to blend personal experience with broader social commentary, a skill that has earned her a growing following on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. Her podcast work has expanded her reach beyond live audiences, and her appearances on mainstream shows have positioned her as a rising voice in comedy.

As of now, Wiener will perform at Rumor’s from June 18 to June 23. She has no announced specials or tours beyond the club run, but her recent visibility on television and podcasting suggests that further opportunities—such as a Comedy Central special or a larger touring schedule—could be forthcoming. For now, fans can catch her in New York and follow her continued growth as a writer, performer, and commentator on the uncomfortable corners of everyday life.
