Dynamite Entertainment Announces New Firefly Comic Series by Mark Russell and Lorenzo Re

In September 2026, the long‑awaited Firefly universe is set to launch anew on comic paper, thanks to a fresh creative partnership between Eisner‑Award winner Mark Russell and illustrator Lorenzo Re. Dynamite Entertainment’s new line will debut with issue #1 on September 2, a date that fans of the space‑western will have been marking on their calendars for years.

The inaugural issue, titled Firefly #1, follows Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds as he scrambles to raise cash to keep the Serenity afloat. Meanwhile, Simon and Kaylee, posing as a married couple, attempt a high‑stakes heist that spirals out of control. Russell’s tight, character‑driven script is complemented by Re’s kinetic line work, promising a visual and narrative experience that feels both faithful to the original series and fresh for comic readers.

The book contains 32 pages and carries a Teen rating. It will retail at $4.99, and Dynamite is adding a premium mystery blind bag to the launch. Each blind bag will randomly contain one of six variant covers, drawn from a set that features art by Robert Quinn, Meghan Hetrick, Declan Shalvey, Paris Alleyne, Stephen Byrne, and Daniel Warren Johnson.

This release marks the franchise’s return to the comic page after a long history of adaptations. Dark Horse Comics had previously issued sporadic miniseries and one‑shots that bridged the 2002 television series and the 2005 film Serenity. In 2018, Boom Studios acquired the license and launched an ongoing line that included a main series and spin‑offs, often written by Greg Pak.

Dynamite’s CEO and owner Nick Barrucci said the company is “bringing Firefly back to the page” and highlighted the partnership with Russell and Re. Barrucci noted that the publisher has already released licensed comics for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, positioning Firefly as the next Joss Whedon‑created television‑to‑comic adaptation in its catalogue.

Russell, known for Red Sonja, The Lone Ranger, The Flintstones, Snagglepuss, Superman: Space Age, and Second Coming, is returning to Dynamite after a successful run on other titles. Artist Lorenzo Re, whose credits include The Terminator, brings a dynamic visual style that should resonate with both long‑time fans and new readers.

The Firefly franchise, created by Joss Whedon, premiered on Fox in September 2002 and was cancelled after 11 of 14 episodes. The series has maintained a strong fan base and was followed by the 2005 film Serenity. The franchise has expanded into tabletop role‑playing games and other media.

Dynamite’s new Firefly line adds to the publisher’s growing roster of licensed properties, which includes Army of Darkness, Terminator, RoboCop, and Zorro. The company’s distribution partnership with Simon & Schuster and its history of publishing both original and licensed titles position it to reach a broad audience.

The first issue will be available through standard comic book retailers and online outlets on September 2, 2026. Subsequent issues are expected to follow on a monthly schedule, though no official release cadence has yet been announced.

In summary, Dynamite Entertainment’s Firefly series brings a fresh creative team to a beloved franchise, continuing the legacy of Joss Whedon’s space‑western world in a new comic format.
