Reagan Biopic Returns to U.S. Theaters for July 4 Weekend, Expanding with New Footage and Soundtrack

On July 4, 2026, U.S. moviegoers will see a newly expanded version of the Ronald Reagan biopic that first opened in theaters on August 30, 2024. The re‑release, timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, will begin with limited group screenings over the Fourth‑of‑July weekend and roll out to a wide release in roughly 600 theaters in September.

Director Sean McNamara revealed that the updated cut adds ten minutes of footage that had been cut from the original release. In a statement, he said, “One of the hardest things about directing a feature film is leaving behind incredible moments on the cutting room floor. I’m so happy to have some of my favorite scenes back in the film for audiences to experience them for the first time.” The added scenes aim to deepen the portrait of Reagan’s life and career.

The July 4 screenings will take place in more than a dozen cities. RedState political commentator Bob Hoge attended a premiere event and spoke with actor Jon Voight, who plays a former KGB agent in the film. The event was part of a broader promotional push that also highlighted the movie’s soundtrack.

The soundtrack, available on CD and LP, features covers of American songs performed by U.S. artists. Producer Mark Joseph, who oversaw the music, explained on social media that the project began with a list of sixty artists he hoped to involve. He noted that securing contributions from Bob Dylan and the band KISS proved challenging, but Dylan eventually agreed to record a cover of “Don’t Fence Me In,” a Cole Porter standard that the director felt resonated with Reagan’s legacy.

Reagan has performed strongly in ancillary markets. According to the film’s publicist, the movie was #2 on Amazon’s overall Best Sellers list for DVD, Blu‑ray, and digital download sales on a Monday, having held the #1 spot over the preceding weekend. In the weeks following President‑elect Donald Trump’s victory on November 5, 2024, the film’s home‑video sales surged, a trend noted by industry observers.

Box‑office receipts for the original theatrical run exceeded $30 million worldwide. The film’s release strategy—limited theatrical run followed by a digital‑only release—was designed to maximize both audience reach and revenue across platforms.

The 2026 re‑release aligns with the America250 celebrations, a series of events and releases commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence. By tying the film’s return to the July 4 weekend, the distributors aim to capitalize on patriotic sentiment while offering viewers a fresh look at a pivotal figure in American history.

The film’s cast includes Dennis Quaid as Reagan, Penelope Ann Miller, Robert Davi, Lesley‑Anne Down, and Jon Voight. It was directed by Sean McNamara, who has previously helmed projects such as Soul Surfer and The Miracle Season.

In addition to the new footage, the re‑release will feature updated marketing materials that emphasize the film’s historical context and the expanded soundtrack. The distributors have not announced any changes to the film’s runtime beyond the added ten minutes.

The upcoming wide release in September will make the film available in a broader network of theaters, allowing a larger audience to experience the updated version. The distributors have confirmed that the film will be shown in approximately 600 theaters nationwide.

The re‑release is a rare example of a contemporary biopic being revisited for a significant national anniversary. It reflects the ongoing interest in presidential biographies and the commercial viability of revisiting recent releases with added content.

As the July 4 weekend approaches, theater owners and audiences alike will have the opportunity to see the updated Reagan and hear the new soundtrack that brings fresh musical perspectives to the story of Ronald Reagan’s life and presidency.
