Madras High Court Grants 30-Day Extension to Release Gautham Menons Dhruva Natchathiram

The Madras High Court has granted film director Gautham Vasudev Menon permission to request a 30‑day extension for the release of his long‑delayed Tamil spy thriller Dhruva Natchathiram, starring Chiyaan Vikram. The court will hear the application on Monday, 15 June 2026, the same day a Division Bench will decide appeals filed by investors K. Punniamoorthy and K. Premkumar.

Dhruva Natchathiram has languished in development hell for more than a decade. Originally slated for release on or before 15 June 2026, the deadline was set by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy on 30 April 2026 after a series of financial disputes involving the film’s investors and Madan Pandy of Escape Artists Motion Pictures. Those disputes stemmed from a theatrical distribution agreement for the 2016 film Enai Noki Paayum Thota, which eventually led to arbitration and, in March 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding that transferred 50 % of Dhruva Natchathiram’s rights to Punniamoorthy and Premkumar.

In 2023 the investors filed a civil suit in the Madras High Court and secured an interim injunction that barred the film’s release. Justice Ramamoorthy’s April order lifted that injunction but imposed strict financial safeguards. He required the creation of a dedicated escrow account in the name of Kondaduvom Entertainment—a production company that includes Menon, Pandy and Reshma Ghatala. The order also appointed advocates M.V. Swaroop and H.S. Hredai as observers to supervise all monetary transactions. Payments to creditors could only be made from the escrow account and with the observers’ consent, and no funds could be released to the partners of Kondaduvom Entertainment without court approval.

The April ruling further restrained the investors from obstructing the film’s release and granted Menon the right to apply for an extension if he could not meet the 15 June deadline. Menon has now filed that application, seeking an additional 30 days, which would push the release window to 15 July 2026.

The hearing on 15 June will also address the appeals filed by Punniamoorthy and Premkumar against Justice Ramamoorthy’s decision. The Division Bench, comprising Justices P. Velmurugan and K. Govindarajan Thilakavadi, had reserved its orders on 2 June 2026. The outcome of that appeal could influence the court’s decision on Menon’s extension request.

If the court grants the extension, Dhruva Natchathiram will be released on or before 15 July 2026. Failure to obtain the extension would obligate Menon to release the film by the original 15 June deadline, subject to the escrow and observer conditions already in place. The film’s release after a 13‑year delay is significant for Tamil cinema, as it involves a major star, Chiyaan Vikram, and a director with a strong track record. The case also illustrates how financial and contractual disputes can delay a film’s release and how courts can impose financial safeguards to protect the interests of all parties involved.

At present, the court’s decision on the extension remains pending. The Madras High Court will issue its ruling after the Monday hearing, and the film’s release schedule will be confirmed accordingly.
